UC, 425 librarians reach contract deal
Contra Costa Times

THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA and the American Federation of Teachers have reached agreement on a new three-year contract for the UNIVERSITY SYSTEM'S 425 LIBRARIANS.

Unlike the lengthy and contentious contract negotiations with lecturers and clerical workers, negotiations between UC and librarians took just five months.

Under the new contract, UC agreed to look at appropriate comparison institutions and other benchmarks when determining librarians' salaries.

Senior librarians who retire after 10 years of service will receive the same perks retired non-tenure track faculty receive, such as use of facilities and database resources. The librarians agreed not to engage in any sympathy strikes with other unions. The negotiations began in late April and ended in September.

UC received confirmation last week that union members had approved the agreement.
