I SUBMITTED MY RESUME, WHY HAVE I NOT HEARD FROM ANYONE?

One reason you might not have heard from anyone is that the hiring company or third party recruiter does not know when to contact you.  You may be working a second or third shift and your sleep is important, do yourself and the company or third party recruiter a favor by putting a contact time on your resume or cover letter.  This seems pretty basic but only about one in one hundred candidates puts a best contact time on the resume.  If you live in California and your stated contact time is 9:00 p.m., you might not receive a call from an employer or third party recruiter on the right coast so some flexibility is needed at times.  You can list your work number and state that you can only be contacted to set up a telephone interview time that is convenient to both parties.

Surprisingly, in this electronic day and age, many people do not have answering machines or they only have one telephone line and it is always connected to the Internet.  Both of these situations are easy and relatively cheap to correct .  Go to Best Buy and ask for help.  Both company and third party recruiters lose a lot of interest in a candidate after they call three times and all they get is a ringing telephone or a busy signal.  If you do not care enough about getting a new position to invest in the proper communication equipment, don't submit your resume.

Last night I waited until 10:30 p.m. to call someone in California who had sent me his resume that day.  I announced my company, Discovery Personnel, Inc. , and gave them my name and the candidate or one of  his sons immediately hung up the telephone.  I have grown very weary of having crazed women scream in my ear and then hang up the telephone.  I now have a no call back rule when someone hangs up on me for several reasons.

  1. If the candidate hangs up on me, they may hang up on my client company.  Something I really don't want to happen.
  2. If the candidate hangs up on me, is this really the type of person I want to represent?
  3. The candidate must have contacted many recruiters if they don't recognize my company when I call.  Why should I waste my time calling back?

I realize people have gotten very tired of being called by telemarketers but is it so hard to listen and just say no thank you.  The next time you are not getting any responses from your resume, ask yourself, HOW AM I INTERACTING WITH THE WORLD?
