More about the Wellcome Trust report on publication costs. There's a news item by Susan Mayor, Open access could reduce cost of scientific publishing, in BMJ 2004(8 May);328:1094. An excerpt:"... Sally Morris, chief executive of the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers, Worthing, said: 'It is suggested that publishing costs could be reduced by up to 30% by a move to Open Access. This is nonsense; most of the saving would be due to a move to online-only. Indeed, reduction of publishing revenues by 30% would put many very valuable journals out of business' ...".
