Vivisimo Helps Narrow Net Search for Info. AP via Daily Press Jan 2 2004 5:40PM ET [Moreover - Online search engines news]

Vivisimo like a "superfast librarian".

In describing his search engine, co-founder Raul Valdes-Perez says this (although he is not directly quoted):

"If the Internet is a giant bookstore in which all the books are piled randomly on the floor, then Vivisimo is like a superfast librarian who can instantly arrange the titles on shelves in a way that makes sense."

Should that quote start with, "If the Internet is a giant library?" Librarians generally work at libraries, not bookstores, but I'm just being nit-picky here. The next paragraph is interesting too:

"Consider it a 21st century Dewey Decimal System designed to fight information overload. But unlike libraries, Vivisimo doesn't use predefined categories. Its software determines them on the fly, depending on the search results."

What is wrong with predefined categories? Can you imagine the hoopla if library catalogs could determine categories on the fly? Personally, I like predefined categories...even bookstores (and online bookstores for that matter) have predefined categories. [Library Stuff]
