Stone Skipping

How many times can a stone skip when thrown at a water surface? I've been thrilled to get two or three bounces. But a guy in Texas has done it 38 times, according to Secrets of Stone Skimming Revealed in Nature Science Update. And that's a world record, by the way.

How did he get the rock to skip so many times? Evidently, he threw an ideally shaped rock at the proper velocity, with the right amount of spin, and an angle of 20 degrees as it entered the water. Those are the parameters for max skipping given by a team of French researchers. The team used a stone skipping machine to in the study.

So, you can try to get the just the right velocity, spin and angle of entry, or you can just have fun and experiment with sensing how to do it.
