Downloading Into the Brain

Peter Passaro wonders Is it possible to download knowledge into the brain on BetterHumans. Passaro tells us that lots of people are recording information from the brain, but few have thought about putting information into the brain. It's a really big job, he says. This article focuses strictly hypothetical engineering; no mention of the ethical implications of attempting such a project.

One approach is to mimic an existing mechanism that already gets information into the brain, sensory input. That's actually already being done now to some degree with cochlear implants for the hearing impaired. Visual cortex implants for the blind are reportedly on the horizon. Internet pioneer Vinton Cerf talks about his wife's implants in an unrelated interview. She had been deaf for 50 years and can hear now thanks to an implant.

Passaro goes on to describe two other hypothetical methods, building a memory implant and using mature nanotechnology.

Interesting reading, but it still disturbs me that it's focused solely on engineering.
