Samwu to probe pension reduction. The South African Municipal Workers' Union is to probe reports that thousands of retired local authority employees have had their pension pay-outs reduced by 12% per month, the union said on Tuesday. If true, this is just the latest in a series of worrying developments at the Joint Municipal Pension Fund, the union's collective bargaining officer, Dale Forbes, said. Brown's 'golden rule' gamble. Economic dispatch: The UK economy has far outperformed it's European G7 competitors. While the UK is expected to hit 2% growth or above, the news from the main eurozone economies continues to be grim. According to the OECD, Germany will stagnate economically this year, showing 0% growth after 0.2% growth last year, while France is expected to expand just 0.1% this year after 1.4% growth in 2002. UK moving up poverty league. The UK may soon move out of the bottom of the European poverty league because of "real progress" by government since 1997, say experts. The latest figures suggest poverty has dropped below levels of the early 1990s, but progress has been slower on education and regional inequality. [BBC News | Business | Economy | World Edition]
