Canadian industry punching out As Nortel Networks Corp. talks of unloading the remnants of its assembly operations, amid a tectonic shift in global manufacturing, the astounding aspect is not how many Canadian jobs it would shed, but how few. Only 1,500 Canadian jobs would be affected if the faded powerhouse of Canada's high-tech sector successfully transfers its last manufacturing operations to Flextronics of Singapore. Call centre job fears 'overblown'. The rate at which jobs will flow out of rich countries will not be as high as first feared, according to a report. Around 241,000 jobs will move offshore to countries such as Mexico and South Africa in 2007, according to independent market analyst Datamonitor. But it said the total number of call centre jobs across the world would grow to 4.78 million positions by 2007, compared with 4.2 million in 2003. [BBC News | Business | World Edition]
