New Zealand builders take home biggest pay rise in 5 years Workers in the building trades last year clocked up their highest wage increases for at least five years. Led by carpenters and joiners, whose wage rates grew 4.3 per cent, building tradesmen's pay rates rose 3.3 per cent last year, according to Statistics New Zealand's labour cost index, up from 2.4 per cent in 2002 and 2 per cent the year before.
