Work permit plan to attract EU migrants to ScotlandTHOUSANDS of migrant workers coming to the UK from an enlarged European Union after May 1 are to be encouraged to seek employment in Scotland first.

Minneapolis might shutter schools. Teachers had already heard that the enrollment decline and resulting budget troubles could mean job losses for 220 teachers next year. Alcan workers reject deal to end Arvida standoff. The Arvida facility employs 550 workers. Alcan announced last month that it would close the plant 10 years earlier than the expected closing date of 2015. These Czechs, who are struggling just to get by, do not expect the EU to change their lives in any substantial way. Tower Automotive to move DaimlerChrysler work from Milwaukee to Mexico

Tower Automotive Inc. said today it will shift frame-assembly production for the Dodge Ram pickup from its Milwaukee plant to a joint-venture plant in Mexico, a move done at the behest of DaimlerChrysler AG.

The move is planned for the middle of 2005 and will begin with frames for the 2006 model year. About 500 workers are expected to be laid off because of the move. The Milwaukee plant also produces frames for the Ford Motor Co. Ranger pickup.  Crains Detroit Business Feb 10 2004 5:11PM GMT
