Minneapolis might shutter schools. Teachers had already heard that the enrollment decline and resulting budget troubles could mean job losses for 220 teachers next year. The teachers will have to look at the amount saved and the district's strategy to see "whether this is a justifiable solution or an overreaction," said Louise Sundin, president of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers. "We've all been waiting for the other shoe to fall. I think this is it." Pioneer Planet Feb 10 2004 11:09AM GMT

Czechs and the EU: Little Interest in the EU Among Czech Homeless. BRNO, Czech Republic--While most Czechs believe their country should join the European Union, EU membership leaves many of the poorest people in this city cold. These Czechs, who are struggling just to get by, do not expect the EU to change their lives in any substantial way. Many of them scoff at the EU and say it will have a positive impact on the lives of richer Czechs, but the poor will be forgotten again. Transitions Online Feb 10 2004 3:40PM GMT
