Perth Union using fear tactic company says. The massive turnout of unionists to a hotel worksite at Burswood Resort yesterday was designed to intimidate the Doric construction firm into signing an agreement with the building union, company officials claim. San Francisco wrestles with $300 million deficit. The $300 million figure, out of a budget that this year totaled $4.8 billion, assumes city workers will agree, for the second year in a row, to give the government a reprieve from contributing to their retirement accounts, an amount equal to a 7.5 percent salary cut. Getting negotiators for San Francisco's 36 employee unions to accept that scenario could prove knotty since Newsom also has warned that he won't be able to close the shortfall without hundreds of layoffs. Brazilians Protest on Slow Land Reform (AP). AP - After walking for days to get to the coast from remote towns across Brazil's destitute northeastern interior, thousands of militant farmers converged Friday to press the government for speedier land reform.
Gathering in the capital city of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's native state of Pernambuco, the farmers of the Landless Rural Workers Movement said their recent escalation of land seizures could intensify if their demands are not met.
"We want to show the whole world we need land so we can work," said Manuel Jose de Lima, 36, as he marched with about 2,000 protesting farmers to the federal government's land reform office in Recife. "The rich have most of the land in Brazil and we just need some of it." [Yahoo! News - World]

Trying to reach me? Meet my Receptionist. I got the idea for Receptionist after writing recently about improvements in electronic mail, instant messaging, video conferencing, voice-over-the-Internet phone calls and mobile phones. Receptionist would bring together all forms of electronic identity in a single gateway, making it easier to reach other people and at the same time increasing our privacy. Labor coalition criticizes Nike. A coalition of labor unions from the United States and Canada has sent a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan asking the UN to review Nike Inc.'s affiliation with the UN Global Compact. The letter centers not on Nike's oft-criticized treatment of contracted factory employees, but on Nike's management of its only three unionized factories, located in Canada.
