Hypothosis -

Mobiles and automobiles are competeing technologies. They offer similar levels of freedom. Mobiles to communicate and access information when and where you want. Automobiles to bring you where you want when you want. The scale of 'generation text' in some countries is equivalent to adoption of the automobile by teenagers in the 50's in the US. Cases in point 1) Mobile market penetration in Italy is above 90%. 2)The UK sends more than 60 million text messages every day mostly by young adults and teenagers. 3) There are now more mobiles in China than land lines.

Mobiles and cars share a level of personalization that few other technologies can match. Consider Hot rods and street racers, hyped up stereos. dice in the mirror, bumber stickers, and vanity plates. Now consider ringtones, face plates, themes, and pictures. Of course you can say, "most people don't do that, they just use the phone as a tool." Or only kids do that, they'll grow out of it.  If you're saying that, then you're probably an american, probably an adult american. (Actually, if you're reading this you are almost certainly an adult American anyway.) You might also note that computers offer similar customizations as mobile phones, and many people adopt such decorations, but you can't take computers with you and put them on the table in restaurants. Mobiles are a visible, and audible part of you in public environments, much like (auto)mobiles.

This post has been sitting on my desktop waiting to be finished for quite sometime. This is a big topic and I'm going to leave it there for now.
