It's not really about sports. It's odd how non-sports news about people
who play sports always appears in the sports section. The ex-football
player, Sean Tillman, who was killed in Afghanistan
(http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2004-04-23-tillman_x.htm)
is a fascinating character. It's unusual that someone would give up a
multimillion dollar salary to hunt bad guys in the mountains. My initial
reaction was, "what a nut job", but that was dismissive, and hasty.
Based on statements like this, "As a rookie trying to make the team, Tillman rode a bicycle to the team's Tempe facility each day because he didn't own a car. And he refused to use a cell phone." I think he was a highly moral and dedicated individual with a conservative (I don't mean politically) value system different from mainstream america, and I totally respect that.
Based on the fact that he was a NFL safety and an Army Ranger, he must have been a total bad ass.
This is a rare and great combination. My only question is how could he see the rest of us ultra-consumptive-fat-bags as worth fighting for.
Or maybe he just wanted to kill people.
