Gunning Down the 91
I know that's a California thing to call freeways "the" something or other (or even to call them freeways, for that matter), but I like the meter.

I feel I have to at least mention how we're ducking while speeding through Longmeadow, but I figured anything relevant about our resident punk-with-a-slingshot will be done to death by the Boston and Hartford media. They're all over it, and all over here. Our local Springfield scribes and orators are downplaying it quite a bit by comparison.

Maybe because damage caused by errant projectiles fired/launched by errant truants along our major north-south arterial is old news. Or perhaps we Springfieldians have more important things to worry about. But I'd like to think because we live here, and this is a road we actually use, and it's our panes of safety glass due for replacement, we're showing restraint.

Do I really have to be the only one to point out that circuses are fun? Lots of punks and lots of slingshots out there. Some of them might even actually live in Springfield. You never know. Here's an idea! Let's egg 'em on with excessive attention! Before long, there'll be so many "projectiles" flying through the air on that stretch of road we'll all be taking Route 5. They won't like that traffic in Longmeadow, but it would serve 'em right for pinning their delinquency issues on their "less reputable" neighboring community.

When Mass Highway finishes re-installing those light poles on 91 (to aid nighttime marksmanship), I hope there's a little money left over to replace the "Entering Springfield" sign that's long been missing on the northbound side. Make it a big one. It's easy, out there in the greenbelt, to be confused about where one town ends and another begins. We want our area visitors and passers-by to know which police department to call when their windows get knocked out.

Let's hope those out-of-town news crews spend lots of money while they're here, at least.

And, as always, be careful out there. 11:15:30 AM  permalink  comment []trackback []
