SHS Directory

Yesterday I expressed concern that a recent mailing to '58s might be an effort to collect personal information and sell it to spammers and identity thieves. Not so, says Judy Vicars Van Hagen, who writes as follows:

"I talked to Sherri Pohlman at SHS today, and inquired about the postcard from the Harris Publishing Company. She assured me that it is totally legitimate. They are the company that in 1999 did the Springfield High School Alumni Directory, and they do it usually every 5-6 years, so it is right on target for a repeat. We were all contacted back then. [I guess they missed me--Will]

"I bought one of the directories from 1999 and it is a great book. There is section in the very first page or so that says 'the directory is for official School and Alumni use, and also for individual communications of a personal nature between members listed herein. Use of this directory for any other purpose, including, but not limited to, reproducing and storing in a retrieval system by any means, electronic or mechanical, photocopying or using the addresses or other information contained in this directory for any private, commercial, or political mailing is strictly prohibited and is in direct violation of copyright and constitutes misappropriation of corporate property.'

"So, it looks like we can call off the watch dogs, as this is not a scam and is not going to be used for mailing lists, etc. We probably should encourage classmates to participate, as it makes a great reference book, not just for our class, but for all the classes. The students in the book from 1999 go back as far as Susan Wilcox in the 1800's."

So there you are, folks--and it's up to you to decide if you want to participate.
