Post Holiday Melancholy The three wise men on our 'seasonal table' have paid their visit to baby Jesus, left their gifts, and are now on their way home. And right on cue, I'm starting to feel a wee bit sad. I'm not ready for the festivities to be over just yet.
My way of dealing with this - since I can't go off on a wonderfully romantic holiday to Mexico like SOME ;) - is to start thinking about next Christmas. To that end, yesterday I found a great sale in a children's clothing store and stocked up on presents for two of my nieces. I also started making a gift for one friend and am in the creative thinking process for another.
I can also take solace in the fact that our Robbie Burns party is coming up in two and a half weeks.
News Clippings Funny, but for some reason I got out of the habit of posting links to news stories. Not sure why, but here's today's offerings.
Calling all Canadian Patriots, Eh? (Globe and Mail) - It's not something Canadians normally do: noisily proclaim how wonderful we are. But a new magazine, published by Reader's Digest Magazines Canada Ltd. and called Our Canada, is so unapologetically patriotic you'd think it was, well, American.
A Good Hard Time Was Had By All (Globe and Mail) - When Arnold Schoenberg died in 1951, composer and philosopher T. W. Adorno remarked that his music marked the end of affability in classical composition. His point was that Schoenberg required people to work for their pleasure, as if Wagner hadn't done the same in the Ring cycle.
Dancing in the Company of Men (Globe and Mail) - The name 3M stands for 3 Men, and the mandate of this Toronto-based dance collective is choreography by men only, for men only. "We still love women and want to continue to work with them," says co-founder Marvin Vergara. "3M is simply providing an avenue for men to explore male energy and male issues [through] dance." Thus, when 3M's second production And . . . debuts on Friday at Toronto's Winchester Street Theatre, women may be behind the scenes as lighting designer and stage manager, but creatively, the show is a male preserve.
