Excuse Me While I Rant In the last few days, eight wolves have been killed in Whitehorse. Our fine government in all its wisdom set snares for them, because people were complaining that wolves were killing their pets.
It's been really cold here lately. Of course the wolves are going to be hungry. And of course if the pickings are thin in the wild, they're going to come into town to get whatever food they can find, which could include Fido or Fluffy if the pet owners are stupid enough to let them run free. It upsets and saddens me that these beautiful wild creatures had to lose their lives because us dumb humans have forgotten that we are closely sharing this land with many creatures; creatures who live by nature's golden rule...eat or be eaten. We have also forgotten that one thoughtless action (like leaving out a garbage can full of tantilizing smells, or allowing a tasty morsel of a pet cat to wander outside by itself) could be sentencing a wild animal to death, since once it becomes habituated, wildlife officers' tactics kick in - including snares and bullets.
I am sorry to say that in the past I have been guilty of this thoughtlessness myself. A couple of summers ago I threw some cabbage soup in my backyard compost. That night, a bear was attracted by the smell, and broke down our fence to get to its midnight meal. I felt terrible, and prayed that the bear got far away before a conservation officer got wind of its actions. It was a good reminder to me about the realities of living in the Yukon.
