The Travelling Harpsichord Last night I had a long dream about a harpsichord that I apparently owned. I had transported this harpsichord by plane from Whitehorse to Yellowknife for some reason, without any difficulty. However shipping it back was another story. The folks at Air North in Yellowknife (in real life Air North doesn't fly to Yellowknife but this is the dream world remember) were about to load it on the airplane when I stopped them and said that I would get it home myself. I guess I figured I'd put it in the back of my truck. But then I realized I didn't have a truck, and when I returned to Air North to tell the staff I'd changed my mind they were no where to be found and my harpsichord and I had missed our flight. I went on to concoct numerous complicated plans about how I'd get this instrument home....flying it part of the way and driving it the rest, in various configurations. Not sure if I ever got it back to Whitehorse -- I think I woke up before I got that far.
In my waking life, there's a harpsichord that has been 'on the periphery' on and off for more than 20 years. When I lived in Frobisher Bay, our MLA Dennis Patterson had such an instrument. I never had a chance to play it, but I do remember seeing it in his home and being intrigued, since I'd never seen one before other than in photos. Dennis eventually sold the instrument to the ex-husband of a woman I used to work with. He later moved to Whitehorse and eventually sold it to the woman who I share my teaching studio with, who eventually sold it to my piano teacher. So a few years back, I found myself finally getting the chance to try it out. It certainly takes some getting used to, but it's a lot of fun to play.
I have a piano recital next week at my teacher's home - maybe I'll ask to play my French Suite on the harpsichord instead of the piano.
