New Music I love picking new music! This time it's one of Debussy's preludes, La Danse de Puck. Puck of course was that impish mischief-maker of a fairy that Shakespeare immortalized in A Midsummer Night's Dream. I think Shakespeare called him 'the joyous nomad of the night'. Or was that someone else who called him that?? Anyway...
I find that although I have a deep love of and a huge respect for Debussy's work, it is never easy for me to play. There's a sort of elusiveness about his music that for me is only remotely capturable if I succeed in removing myself from my body and let this other 'energy' flow in. I know that might sound silly, but it's the only way I know of explaining what happens on those very rare occasions when I feel I've played a line or phrase the way it was meant to be heard. Now if I could only figure out how to make that happen more often!
