Books

What I'm reading now

BOOK: Ronald Reagan: An American Life
I've just started re-reading Ronald Reagan's autobiography.

BOOK: William Bennett: The Book of Virtues
These stories build character. I’ve woven some of them into our district's character education plan.

BOOK: Charles Schultz: Peanuts Treasury
I open up this book whenever I need to unwind.

Music

What I'm listening to now

CD: Bangles: Doll Revolution
My favorite band in the '8o's has a wonderful new album out!

CD: Superchic[k]: Karaoke Superstars
Alternative Christian...what does that mean? In this case, it’s bright, choral rock and roll.

Video

What I'm watching now

DVD: 50 First Dates
Not exactly my genre, but this one is exceptional. A great date movie, too.

DVD: Xena: Season One
After experiencing this six-season grand saga when it first ran, going back to season one is like going home again. A fresh start.

A brief history of liberty

Physicist Stephen Hawking graciously conceded an ongoing bet he's had concerning the "black hole information paradox," after reconciling theoretical physics with what we've been able to observe from Earth about what can escape from a black hole. Without missing a beat, he's decided to enter an even more uncertain domain with his recent political activism:

Scientist Stephen Hawking Decries Iraq War (AP). AP - Britain's most famous scientist, Stephen Hawking, condemned the U.S. led invasion of Iraq as a "war crime" and said Tuesday it was based on lies. [Yahoo! News: Science]

It's my turn to make a wager with Dr. Hawking. The bet is that history will not judge the liberation of Iraq as a "tragedy," but as the first glimmer of hope for millions of people in the Middle East who live under theocratic dictatorships, that they may one day hold freedoms they can not currently exercise. Freedom to question their leaders. Freedom for women to earn an education. Freedom from slavery. Freedom from forced marriage.

The loser buys the winner a dictionary, so that the definitions of such words and phases as "war crime" can be recovered at will.

Sir Winston Churchill. "I have always felt that a politician is to be judged by the animosities he excites among his opponents." [Quotes of the Day]
