2005 College Rankings By Category The Princeton Review ranks the ten most academic Universities and Colleges in the U.S.. St. John’s College ( the Annapolis Campus) was ranked #4 and the campus in Santa Fe was ranked # 7 See the review below
#7. St John’s College, Santa Fe, New Mexico campus.
Imagine a college with no tests, no lectures, no majors, no professors. Well, what you're imagining is St. John's College. Now when they say no professors, they don't really mean no professors. They mean that the well-trained members of the faculty are "tutors." Because there are "no lecture classes," "St. John's College is kind of like a congress--it's run by discussions." Students meet in tutorials of only a small group of classmates and in labs and seminars that consist of no more than 22 students; in each setting, the groups discuss their responses to readings of primary works. Once a week, the entire student body congregates for a collective lecture. "The academic experience is what you make of it," writes a senior. "Since there is little ‘formal' evaluation, it is possible to get by doing almost nothing." But that's not usually the case because the expectations of preparation and participation often force "everyone to think critically." There's no question that the St. John's style isn't for everyone. As one student puts it, "The Johnny is the student who is miserable everywhere else."
