Finding SAAJ on OC4J 9.0.4

Sometimes working at a largish company can be an exercise in entertainment in information sharing.  Even though there is a flood of e-mail on a daily basis, things always slip by, often due to this volume.  Over the holidays an OTN user rightfully took me to task because I was swearing up and down that SAAJ was not supported on OC4J 9.0.4, only on OC4J 10.0.3 Developer Preview.

He then posted back on the online forum a link to my colleague's writeup over in OracleAS Portal land who graciously have made the Sun JAX-RPC RI work (along with a number of patches)  on OC4J 9.0.4  and as a by product of that effort also have made the SAAJ libraries work too.   In checking around it turns out various people were aware of this but it wasn't widely known.

This came out because the OracleAS Portal folks recently released their verification service for the Web Services for Remote Portal standard which they have built on JAX-RPC to be forward compatible with J2EE 1.4.  While this feature on OC4J 9.0.4 is a developer's preview too like all of OC4J 10.0.3, it met the criteria of the customer that it be SAAJ on OC4J 9.0.4.

If you are trying to keep up on this area of Portal, aside from checking out http://portalstudio.oracle.com, make sure to read Portal PM Tug Grall's blog as he is often doing cool things in that world - for example, using Portal to host his blog (I think his attitude is "who needs blog software when I've got OracleAS Portal and the JPDK").

I will do a little exploring in this area over the next few weeks to get an understanding of what the JAX-RPC/SAAJ capabilies are in this 9.0.4 preview release.
