I went to see Shrek 2 with my kids and a couple of friends today, at the teeny movie theater in Friday Harbor. I love small movie theaters, and especially small town small movie theaters. It's much more of a community thing than a mass-produced-experience. And the popcorn's better too.

There are lots of reviews out that say that Shrek 2 is better than the original. I'm not sure I'd go that far, but I would certainly agree that it is at least as good. The graphics are amazing, of course (especially the trees -- take a good look at them if you go to see the movie) and the story keeps you interested. The real magic, though, is in the comedic timing. They know that their main asset is the parody of classic fairy tales, and they use it to spring funny twists on you with almost no warning. I found myself laughing out loud on a regular basis through this movie, as I did with the original. It is great fun.

Oh, and stay for the credits.

Robyn Williams' interview with me for Radio National in Australia apparently aired last month... and nobody told me, but I just found a posting of it, including a transcript. Lots of typos in the transcript, but the general meaning is still there in most of what I said.

It's very weird reading a transcript of an interview you did. Especially one you did several months ago, because it's no longer fresh in your mind and since your thinking on any particular subject evolves over time, you wouldn't necessarily answer the same question the same way today. Leads to some interesting cognitive dissonance.

Anyway, it was a fun interview to do and I think a pretty interesting read. Mr. Williams intersperses my interview with that of Kentaro Toyama, one of the fascinating MSR researchers I have the privilege of working alongside.
