Users' views of losing vendor

Here's an analysis from Infoworld based on comments sent in by PeopleSoft users. These comments probably reflect the views and feelings of any customers who have had their main supplier taken over. You only have so many options. Stay the course and hope the new company continues to support your (now) legacy products; see if the new company provides financial incentives for switching to its product line (undoubtly the hope of the acquiring company-it's just putting a competitor out of business so it can sell more of its products); or use this opportunity to test the waters and see what else is available.

One interesting line of comments regarded support, which is a big part of these major software implementations. Many said they would likely go with third party support rather than just jump right into Oracle support. Potentially a big loss of revenue for Oracle.

Other comments were that this is just the beginning. Expect to see more consolidation in enterprise software.

My take is that you should expect to see new companies and competition spring up in the area of peripheral modules that plug in to these monsters. Most major companies already have the huge databases in place. They can probably survive for years by just adding new modules and features from third party suppliers.

How much of this is true in automation? What have any of you experienced in the takeovers in the automation market? ABB, Schneider, Siemens, GE Fanuc have all bought up properties. What has been your experience? Did you stay, or did you go?

Analysis: PeopleSoft users speak out about Oracle takeover. The great debate over the impact of Oracle's hostile takeover of PeopleSoft has all the big industry analyst organizations weighing in. However, in most of the analysis one group's opinion seems to have been overlooked: that of PeopleSoft users. [InfoWorld: Top News]
