Ever wonder why I don't blog products often? Well, a few weeks ago, I posted a release about a new wireless device from Elpro. Looked pretty interesting from the text of the release (I seldom get to see and play with these things, so little first hand knowledge comes from these posts). Well, Nick over at the ProSoft Blog got a reply from his product person. In case you saw that one (and I'm not doing any more volleying on this issue), I asked for a response from Frank Williams at Elpro. And he sent this:
To be clear, the 240U-E can be configured to be an AP AND a Bridge AND a Repeater. It can also be a Router (instead of a bridge) AND a serial server. And it will fulfill all these functions simultaneously, with higher RF power and better sensitivity than (XX) with a higher level of security.

That's why I like Carl Henning's work at Profibus so much. Never compares specs, just states his own. On this topic, I invite interested parties to go to each Website and compare specs.

I've written before about a new "leader" who has entered peripherally into my life. What a continuous example of bad leadership. Her big push was for building a team. To this end, she calls a meeting of staff (all professionals on the same organizational level) and orders them to be a team. When the discussion gets around to a particular topic, one of the team suggests that in the future they might do something differently. "You're not a team player," the poor suggester was told. "We can't have negativity on the team. You'd better go along with what I say or you're not on the team. If you don't like it you can leave. And there are people who will tell me if they hear negativity."

Then again, a few were selected quietly for a planning retreat. The others were told the day before that they had better be at work to cover for the few selected.

I can't believe that there exists this sort of management anymore. How do you handle team building? As we report on what companies do and what technologies they employ, everything involves collaboration. In fact, the entire Web 2.0 movement with its emphasis on social networking is further pushing collaboration. So, how do you handle collaboration? If you have a story to tell, I'm interesting in publishing it. Send me a note. Cheers.

Carl Henning from the Profiblog commented on yesterday's post from the Fieldbus Foundation meeting regarding ARC's market share study (somehow I thought that would generate a comment):

I just saw reference to that ARC study today. The interesting thing is that it's based on revenue and not the number of devices. The last time I looked, the node counts for FF and PROFIBUS PA were about equal. But the FF revenues were twice the PA revenues. Does this mean that users pay twice as much for FF than for PA?

ARC's market share studies are something I usually stay away from. But, it wouldn't surprise me if there is one that does node counts--maybe unveiled in August? As I stated in the report, this is for products and services. It includes software and undefined services--not just number of nodes. All my contact with Profibus numbers always emphasizes node count. So, revenue/nodes--I don't know. I'll just await the next ARC study.

I ran across this press release yesterday. So, I'm wondering...is innovation a position, job title or way of life? How  would you like to be given the task of being the "home of innovation"?

Here's the press release, unedited. I think the innovation is in the marketing department for trying to find a good way to say that they make tools for mechanics. Used to be very well regarded, but I've lost contact and don't know anymore..

"Snap-on Inc., a leading global innovator, manufacturer and marketer of tools, diagnostics and equipment solutions for professional users announced today that Ben Brenton has joined the company as vice president -- innovation. Brenton will drive innovative products, solutions and processes across all of Snap-on's global businesses. The new position further demonstrates the company's commitment to creating the most valued productivity solution in the world."
