BLACK YEAR FOR JOURNALISTS
The BBC is reporting that 75 journalists and other media workers have been killed so far this year, only eight fewer than the 83 who were slain in 2003.
Drawing on statistics from the International Federation of Journalists and other sources, the BCC reports that:
- 83 journalists or media staff killed worldwide in 2003 (70 in 2002)
- 75 journalists or media staff killed in first eight months of 2004 alone
- 766 journalists detained and at least 1,460 physically attacked or threatened in 2003
The report comes on the heels of the murder of Italian freelance journalist Enzo Baldoni, 56, who was executed in Iraq Thursday night by his kidnappers.
