Like a Beanbag

I love Camille Paglia. I think Andrew Sullivan's greatest achievement in his tenure as chief editor of The New Republic was his promotion of Paglia's feature articles there.

That's not to say I always agree with her. I don't think it's even possible to always agree with Paglia, since she doesn't agree with herself 100% of the time. I'd guess that I agree with her a bit more than half the time on politics and a bit less than half the time on literature. But just as some writers are tedious to read even when you agree with them, some writers are a joy to read even when you disagree. For me, Paglia is prominent among them.

I loved this line from her recent Salon column. She's discussing the (im)possibility of a Democratic presidential ticket featuring both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

And besides, neither Hillary nor Obama, who are major divas, should ever be stashed in the V.P. micro-slot, which would humiliatingly limit their political mobility over future years. A V.P. should be deferential and lower wattage and never upstage the head of the ticket. Only a masochist or castrate would want to be Hillary's V.P. anyhow, since Bill would sit on him like a beanbag.

A masochist or a castrate. Hmmm, who among the veep contenders meets that description? Bill Richardson?
