Iridology
The final Alternative Health methodology I have encountered is Iridology. This one really spooked me and I did research on it immediately after it was used to diagnose my condition. I was convinced because it accurately pinpointed my condition but my sense of incredibility had to be satisfied.
Iridology is based on the belief that the medical history of the body is reflected in various shades of streaks in the iris, the colored portion of the eye. A sample of the charts used in Iridology will be found here. Sounds insane but I was convinced by the events related below.
In the latter half of the 1980s I was playing at a very high level of darts, provincially, nationally and internationally. I was also suffering from a chronic condition that affected my lower back and hip. After playing for a few hours fatigue would set in and I would lose all my energy and concentration. My level of play would instantly drop from excellent to terrible. As the years passed the fatigue would set in more quickly and I was usually totally frustrated because the fatigue would coincide with the pressure games.
I heard about a naturopath that was in the area so decided to make an appointment. On the day of my appointment I was feeling 100%, no limp at all. I was asked to fill a form with personal information and the naturopath immediately approached me with a magnifier glass and with no dialogue at all began to look into my eyes. He would look, then consult a chart, look again and I was thinking, “What is going on here?”. When he finished he informed me I had a problem in my lower back and hip that would sometimes radiate into my groin. I was flabbergasted. I had an excess of acid in those parts and after some physical stress the lactic acid build-up would add to the acid already present. Then the muscles would become saturated with acid and fatigue would set in.
He suggested some supplements and a tightly controlled diet. After eight weeks I felt so good I bought a set of golf clubs and became a golf nut. Golf is a game that gives a whole new meaning to the concept of frustration.
That was my only encounter with Iridology but I am a believer because the man was able to pinpoint my condition with absolutely no clues from me. Hey, wait a minute, maybe the detractors will claim that he read my mind.
