Here's an excerpt from the Minnesota Canoe Racers email group announcing the official opening of the Rum River all the way down to Anoka Fairgrounds. That's the normal gathering place for the next few months on Saturday and Sunday mornings for the gang. Most start at 8am and will circle back to pick up others at 9am if they know they're coming.

Paddled the Rum yesterday ---------(3/22)-------put in at the 155th st park (7th ave N to 155 L then L on Kiowa)-----went downstream to just at the upriver end of the main cut where I was cut off by about a 3 foot section of ice ---had I not been in a nice solo cedar strip canoe could have maybe cut through it--------upriver is wide open though numerous icebergs floating about-----just downriver from the sandbar a large bald eagle is keeping an eye on traffic

Amazing what one day will do on the river. We put in at the FAIRGROUNDS & paddled to the island," NO ICE''! Except for a couple of small floating ice shunks, nothing serious! Now we need a little more water, although the shallow water gives us more interesting paddling. Talk about interesting paddling, we sure enjoyed or should I say survived some interesting paddling. Keith came up with this SECRET intervals, we only completed three fourths of the work out. As you can see my hands & arms are barely working. We met the SULLIVANS at the bridge. We asked them to join us, but they were done seeing as they put in at 3:30p.m. See you on the Rum----Lee-----hut hut

The Rum River is officially open for paddling. Leaping Lee Jarpey and I did
the sandbar Island loop, and also practiced some of our secret strategies.
