The DNR has certified 160,000 young people since the boating education program's inception in 1975.
"I think that's one of the reasons we've seen such a tremendous drop in the number of boating deaths since the 1960s and 70s. Back then, we'd see almost 60 deaths some boating seasons," Smalley said.
DNR statistics show that in 2003 there were 17 boating deaths with more than three times the number of boats than were on state waters in the late 1960s.
"Now all the kids who took the course 30 years ago are safe adult boaters with teen-aged boat operators of their own," said Smalley. "Minnesota is now one of the safest major boating states in the country." |
