It's that time of year [posted by Troy] Time to start buying in honor of the holiday season. I wonder, if we could zap someone from the past, say 1877, to the present, say 2004, would they be shocked at the way we "vote" with money, the way that TV is full of advertising, the thought of name brands, our parades that are just long advertisements? Would our consumer existence surprise that person? I wonder?

Green River vs. Joliet [posted by Troy] One of the many, many, many interesting debates that my family had over Thanksgiving was a debate about the history of Dairy Queen. The claim was made that the first DQ was near East Moline, in Green River. Well, if you read the history page of DQ, you will see that the first DQ was in Joliet, BUT, Green River did play a role in the history of this frozen-treat paradise.

Kevin Young [posted by Troy] We are heading out for Turkey Day, so this blog will be on hold for most the week. I wanted to leave you with a poem by Kevin Young. It's from 1984, and most of us who grew up during that time will recognize most of the references. Mr. Young is a GenXer and his work echoes the sarcastic but questioning tone of our generation. This one leaves much to the reader to think about and explore, hinting at ideas and then playfully pulling away from them. I think it is done with great skill. When you read it, have fun with it.

Well, the Blog of Death is pretty much a running obiturary site. Each day there is a write-up about someone new and amazing who recently died. Like I said, morbid, but what a way to be remembered!

Taking over a town near you! [posted by Troy] Everyone in the Chicago-land area was a buzz about the recent Sears/KMart merger. One of the reasons that the experts cited for this merger was to better compete with Walmart. While in Monterey, I was able to catch this Frontline special on Walmart. It reveals the ruthlessness of this Arkansas company, and the tactics it uses to force product producers to ship jobs oversears in order to keep price points low, so that Walmart can continue to sell products. Anyway, you can watch the episode for yourself at the PBS Web site. Those of you who live in Walmart-only towns may find this especially interesting.

First year fighting terror! [posted by Troy] We all wonder about the first thanksgiving. We don't worry that Lincoln was the first president to declare Tgiving in the 1860s. We also don't care that millions of people died thanks to the disease that Europeans brought to the native americans. Hey, that's progress. Weapons of mass destruction...diseases what not. FREEDOM!
