TIME FOR A CHUCKLE IT'S HEALTHY TO LAUGH

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2: The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3: The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Amerians.

4: The Italians drink a lof of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5: The Germans drinka lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION:

Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

On page 51 of Dr. Carolyn Dean's blockbuster book "The Miracle of Magnesium", Dr Leo Galland reports "hyperactive kids need extra magnesium due to their continuously high adrenaline levels." He recommends 6 mg. per pound of weight daily (240 mg. for a 40 pound child)
and further warns: "because magnesium is so hard to find in a form suitable for young children, use magnesium citrate..." and he recommends a liquid
carrier to make it more bioavailable.

It's an open secret in medicine that many of the articles that appear in medical journals, often purporting to be written by well-known academics, are actually written by unacknowledged ghostwriters in the pay of drug companies.

These "seemingly objective articles" are usually actually part of a marketing campaign to promote a product or draw attention to the condition it treats.

DRUGS, DEVICES AND DOCTORS...

A NEW YORK TIMES COLUMNIST GOT IT RIGHT!
The real story behind the crisis at Merck, the Cleveland Clinic, and the medical industrial complex as a whole "is bigger than either the company or the clinic. It's the story of how growing conflicts of interest may be distorting both medical research and health care in general."

"The economic logic of the medical-industrial complex is straightforward. Prescription drugs and high-technology medical devices account for a growing share of medical spending. Both are products that are expensive to develop but relatively cheap to make. So the profit from each additional unit sold is large, giving their makers a strong incentive to do whatever it takes to persuade doctors and hospitals to choose their products."

http://www.ahrp.org/infomail/05/12/16.php

HAVE A CUP ON ME! - REAL JAVA.
After being warned for years...yes, years - that drinking coffee was bad, bad, bad - guess what? Newly released research confirms the healthiest - and perhaps happiest way to start - or end - every day is....(drum roll please)...
enjoy a real cup of coffee.

Here's why:

According to a 2005 study by researchers at the University of Scranton, Americans now get more healthy, cancer-fighting antioxidants from coffee than from any other dietary source. Overwhelmingly so, in fact. This includes the litany of largely needless (and sometimes downright harmful) vegetables, grains and fruits the mainstream pundits seem always to recommend INSTEAD of a cup or three of delicious Java.

The research, presented at a recent national meeting of the American Chemical Society (the world's largest scientific society, according to Medical News Today), compared the relative antioxidant content of 100 different food items and beverages in the American diet - including mainstream darlings corn, grapes, and beans. Interestingly enough, dates topped the list from an antioxidants-per-serving standpoint. But since dates are not widely considered a staple of American eating habits, the top honors went to the much more commonly consumed coffee (more than half of Americans drink it). It wasn't clear from the research summary whether red wine or dark beer was considered in the study. These are the only two popular items one might think of that might give java a run for its money antioxidant-wise.

Texas) put the medical establishment on notice on Nov. 10, 2005 when he introduced his "Health Freedom Protection Act" (HR4282). In his introductory remarks, Paul stated, "The American people have made it clear they do not want the federal government to interfere with their access to dietary supplements, yet the FDA and the FTC continue to engage in heavy-handed attempts to restrict such access."

That was Paul just getting started. You have to read the read of his remarks...
http://www.house.gov/paul/congrec/congrec2005/cr111005.htm

STOP THE FDA - NOW!

As you probably suspect, the FDA is NOT protecting the public interest. Their 'pretend' oversight does nothing to properly inform consurs of nutritional products as to the validity or reliability of the item's label - and they exert huge pressure (it's OK to call it by its right name "censorship") to prevent accurate and hohnest health claims from reaching the market.

Now at last we all have a great opportunity to re-establish legitimacy.

Here's the 'go-to' website where you can make your views known. Help the freedom-protecting legislative initiatives get passed. PLEASE!

HOW SAFE ARE VITAMINS?
SO GLAD YOU ASKED....
Should anyone tell you vitamins are dangerous, please ask:
"Where are the bodies?"

The 2003 Annual Report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers Toxic Exposures Surveillance System states that there have been only two deaths allegedly caused by vitamins. Almost half of all Americans take nutritional supplements every day, some 145,000,000 individual doses daily, for a total of over 53 billion doses annually. And from that, two alleged deaths? That is a product safety record without equal.

Conversely, pharmaceutical drugs, properly prescribed and taken as directed, kill 106,000 Americans each year. That is over 2,000 each week, dead from their prescriptions. Some physicians estimate the true number of drug-induced deaths to be far higher.

Fatalities are by no means limited to drug products. In the USA in the year 2003, there was a death from "Cream / lotion / makeup," a death from "Granular laundry detergent," one death from plain soap, one death from baking soda, and one death from table salt. Other deaths reported by the American Association of Poison Control Centers included:
aspirin: 59 deaths
aerosol air fresheners: 2 deaths
perfume/cologne/aftershave: 2 deaths
charcoal: 3 deaths
dishwashing detergent: 3 deaths (and interestingly, weapons of mass destruction: 0 deaths)

On the other hand, nutritional supplements have proven to be exceptionally safe. Specifically:
* There were no deaths from B-complex vitamin supplements.
* There were no deaths from niacin.
* There were no deaths from vitamin A.
* There were no deaths from vitamin D.
* There were no deaths from vitamin E.

THE SIMPLE TRUTH IS: VITAMINS SAVE LIVES!
The Journal of the American Medical Association has published the recommendation that every person take a multivitamin daily saying that "(S)uboptimal intake of some vitamins, above levels causing classic vitamin deficiency, is a risk factor for chronic diseases and common in the general population, especially the elderly." It is a sensible idea whose time should have come generations ago.

It is curious that, while theorizing many "potential" dangers of vitamins, critics fail to point out how economical supplements are. For low-income households, taking a two-cent vitamin C tablet and a five-cent multivitamin, readily obtainable from any discount store, is vastly cheaper than getting those vitamins by eating right. The uncomfortable truth is that it is often less expensive to supplement than to buy nutritious food, especially out-of-season fresh produce.

According to David DeRose, M.D., M.P.H., "300,000 Americans die annually from poor nutrition choices." Supplements make any dietary lifestyle, whether good or bad, significantly better. Supplements are an easy, practical entry-level better-nutrition solution for the public, who are more likely to take convenient vitamin tablets than to willingly eat organ meats, wheat germ, and ample vegetables. Scare-stories notwithstanding, taking supplements is not the problem; it is a solution. Malnutrition is the problem.

Public supplementation should be encouraged, not discouraged. Supplements are a cost-effective means of preventing and ameliorating illness. Vitamin safety has been, and remains, extraordinarily high.

Whoops!
Beta Blockers - 'a very honest mistake'

An entirely unwarranted assumption made by the medical profession more than 10 years ago that beta blockers would be effective in treating high blood pressure - even though they had never been tested against other drugs - may have resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, new research revealed this week. (The Independent, 31st, October 2005).

In a review of trials involving 105,000 people, it was found that beta blockers were only half as effective as other drugs in treating hypertension.

The study found that beta blockers reduced the risk of strokes by 19 per cent, whilst other treatments such as diuretics, ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers reduced the risk by 38 per cent.

The study also found that the overall death rate among those on beta blockers was 3 per cent higher.

The study leader, Professor Lars Lindholm of the University of Umea in Sweden described the error as 'a very honest mistake'. . . which must be scant consolation for the families of anyone who died as a result of being prescribed beta blockers.

Does the U.S. REALLY have the best medical care in the world????
As we're always being told....
Well, here's where we rate Number One worldwide:

A new study shows that U.S. leads way in medical errors, and costs!
Patients in the United States reported higher rates of medical errors and
more disorganized doctor visits and out-of-pocket costs than people in
Canada, Britain and three other developed countries, according to a
survey just released. Thirty-four percent of U.S. patients received wrong
medication, improper treatment or incorrect or delayed test results
during the last two years, the Commonwealth Fund found.

Thirty percent of Canadian patients reported similar medical errors,
followed by 27 percent of those in Australia, 25 percent in New Zealand,
23 percent in Germany and 22 percent in Britain, the health care
foundation said.
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N02241096.htm
