Jumpin' Jimminy, refueling does work! I had a serving of Carboom (with caffeine) as I was getting dressed, and then Hammergel every 30 minutes or so. No sag whatsoever in energy level throughout the workout. Maybe couldn't have doubled the distance but 10 miles was within reach.
Nice split, too, with 55:05 out and 55:40 back, with the extra 35 seconds being a pee break.
I carried twice the usual water--500 ml or 16 oz in each hand. That enabled me to take a swig or two every 5 or 10 minutes, for about 500 ml or 16 oz per hour. Which probably is as much I would ever want or need to drink.
Afterward, pasta with Chinese barbecue duck went down real well. After the long one, I'm aiming to have carbs within 30 minutes of ending the run, to replenish stores and quite likely reduce or eliminate muscle soreness the following day.
