RUN/WALK -- 6.03 MILES, 47/49 SPLIT, 15:57 PACE, WATERFRONT, WEIGHT -- 239

By Mile 2, I knew this one was going to be a bit of work. I suppose all the long runs from now until May will require some work as I build distance by one or two miles every week (except for the rest weeks every third week).

Once you've been trotting along for an hour or more, a Clif Shot gel tastes delicious--and it provides an immediate energy boost. My favorites are Sonic Strawberry and Mocha Mocha, the two flavors with caffeine added. The Clif Shots are a special treat. My regular fuel is raspberry-flavored Hammer Gel.

Once I go longer than an hour, I start using a Fuel Belt, the Ironman model, with four pockets for small water bottles. Each bottle holds 6 ounces/180 mililiters, almost a fifth of a liter. In cold weather, I like to down one every 15-20 minutes. The 4-bottle belt is good for about 90 minutes or 6 miles.
