WALK -- 10 MINUTES, WEIGHTS -- 15 MINS, WEIGHT -- 236

I was only headed to the gym for a brief workout on the universal machine but these spiffy new trail shoes--New Balance 906 Off Road--feel so good, I just had to walk for at least 10 minutes on the treadmill.

I bought the shoes to give my spirits a lift. This hamstring problem is getting me down.

HOW TO DEAL WITH A HAMSTRING INJURY

On the Ontario Ultra Series mailing list, I asked for advice. Here's the response from Jenn Dick, an accomplished ultrarunner:

there is no secret. i haven't run (training or racing) since JFK in november(really) until the Frosty 5k, 2 Sundays ago. lots of time off (with lots of cross training, like cycling, eliptical trainer, resistance training and gentle stretching). also had lots of active release therapy and massage (not the fluff and rub type either!)

flats and downhills feel okay, but hills and sprints still pull pretty hard on the hamstring. i may stay away from those for a little while longer so as to not reaggrevate it. i guess time will tell and we'll see how it goes.

I guess I better delete the 30K I wanted to run in May and start all over again.
