Born-Again Runner
Backgrounder, dated January 9, 2004: I'm in my 62nd year, having carried 242 to 246 pounds on my 6'1-1/2" frame for too many years. My high-school weight was 176, so I could drop up to 70 pounds, if I could. Today, I ran for the first time in years, almost three minutes--twice! I've been born again. Alleluia!

GYM -- 30 MINUTES

My painful problem is a severe case of shin splints. I couldn't get in to see a physiotherapist today but did visit my chiropractor. He gave my right foot and shin a good massage and suggested I come back in a few days, which I'll do.

I now have three new exercises added to my repertoire:

I must say I'm relieved it's only shin splnts. Although painful, it isn't debilitating injury, but, obviously, the walk/run regimen I was following was too much. I should have paid attention the slight pain and my hunch a couple of weeks back:

I'm thinking of dropping back to running only twice a week, from three times, and get myself a bicycle. My hunch is that these problems would be reduced or eliminated if I was 40 pounds lighter. It may be easier to burn off the pounds on a bike than on foot.

Anyhow, so goes the thinking tonight.
