Born-Again Runner
Backgrounder, dated January 9, 2004: I'm in my 62nd year, having carried 242 to 246 pounds on my 6'1-1/2" frame for too many years. My high-school weight was 176, so I could drop up to 70 pounds, if I could. Today, I ran for the first time in years, almost three minutes--twice! I've been born again. Alleluia!

WALK/RUN 3/1 TRACK 8 MILES

I wanted to see where I was at in terms of being able to attempt the Seaton Trail 25K on September 24, so went the longest in several months. Eight miles would be just past the halfway mark in a 25K.

I walked/jogged steadily at about a 15-minute pace. By the 7th and 8th mile I was nearing the end of what of what I could do without really gritting my teeth.

The magazine project is nearing completion but on Saturday I'm off to Latvia with Significant Other, so life will continue not to be normal for a while.

Next week I'll drop back to 6M and then a week later see what 10-12M feels like. I don't want to give up on the 25K unless I really have.

We'l lbe staying at Jurmala outside of Riga where there is a 32-km beach, the longest beach in Europe, I believe. We'll probably be walking an hour every morning. I'll aim to get at least the one long walk/run in every week.

If I don't make the Seaton Trail 25K, I'll be disappointed as I've been thinking about it all year, but there might be another such distance a little later in the fall for which I could be better prepared with an addition month of training.
