Born-Again Runner
Backgrounder, dated January 9, 2004: I'm in my 62nd year, having carried 242 to 246 pounds on my 6'1-1/2" frame for too many years. My high-school weight was 176, so I could drop up to 70 pounds, if I could. Today, I ran for the first time in years, almost three minutes--twice! I've been born again. Alleluia!

WALK/RUN 4/1 ONE HOUR 10 MINUTES, BACK BAY, NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF.

In Newport Beach, when you tire of the boardwalk, or want to avoid the crowds on a Sunday, then you head for Back Bay, a nature preserve that runs about three miles inland.

It's another gorgeous, sunny Southern California kind of day, without a cloud in the sky and hardly any haze or smog, with the brown Santa Ana Mountains off in the distance.

Back Bay is where the only marathon I entered ended, way back in the mid-1980s. I remember the day and the run. I wanted to get under 4 hours--and I did, easily. If I recollect, my time was 3 hours 47 miniutes or something like that. Ever since then I've been able to say I'm a three-hour-and something marathoner. Hah!

Then, I was practising my ultra pace, run 9 walk 1. Today, 60 pounds later, my only pace is walk 4 run 1.
