Born-Again Runner
Backgrounder, dated January 9, 2004: I'm in my 62nd year, having carried 242 to 246 pounds on my 6'1-1/2" frame for too many years. My high-school weight was 176, so I could drop up to 70 pounds, if I could. Today, I ran for the first time in years, almost three minutes--twice! I've been born again. Alleluia!

DOWN WITH A COLD IN FORT LAUDERDALE

Last week was simply too hectic, what with a restart of running on top of business and family duties prior to my departure for a three-week trip on magazine work. At the end of the week, instead of resting, I drove 25 hours over two days to Florida.

Now, I'm holed up in a hotel overlooking the harbor in Fort Lauderdale, forcing myself to stay in bed. After a trip to Dennys' for chicken noodle soup and Walgreen's for Mucinex expectorant, Benzedrex nasal decongestant, Cepacol Ultra lozenges, three boxes of 3-ply Kleenex, lots of Kerns jouces, water and Pepperidge Farm Brussels cookies, I'm all set.
