News in Purfleet

There are two sources of news in Purfleet. Printed papers is what I'm talking about. There's the 'general store' that provides mainly copies of The Sun, The Daily Star and The Daily Sport.

The other is Ailses. Here's a picture:

Ailses is run by a quaint elderly couple. Probably the grumpiest people in Purfleet. Ask for a copy of the Guardian and see what happens. The great thing about Ailses is the smell of piss as you enter the store. First thing in the morning on the way to the station, you decide you want to get a newspaper.

To enter the store press the latch, listen for the 'ting' of the bell and brace youself for the power punch smell of 40 year old urine. Lovely.

Tesco Extra Rainham

A major breakthrough today. I decided that even though there are no trains again this weekend due to engineering works and the rail replacement busses are not running to time, I would risk a trip to the Rainham Tesco Extra. Although not in Purfleet it's in the ballpark. I decided to seek out a free to view set top box. Tesco Extra sell ranges of home electronics equipment at resonable prices.

It took about 15 minutes to get there. I found shelves loaded with DVD players, CD players and other items. There were two set top boxes on display but the christmas locusts had got there before me.

Sainsburys home delivery continued.

sainsburystoyou arrived within the agreed time frame, 20:00 - 21:00. He (only one guy) was here at 20:20.

What a series of surprises online shopping can be. The substitution items can be very entertaining. I ordered a Cranks 800gm organic wholemeal loaf. What did I get? A 400gm Sainsburys loaf - well at least it was organic. Have they really run out of 800gm loaves of bread?

I also ordered Pure organic sunflower spread. Not in stock. Substitution item, No suitable alternative. No suitable alternative? It's margarine! how about... butter?

That's internet shopping. I'm probably the first person in Purfleet to order organic products. I'm waiting for Ocodo to start delivering out this way - that's gonna happen.

By the way, what are American bloggers going to write about now that their election is over? Who won by the way?

Sainsburys home delivery

On Thursday the 4th November 2004 sometime between 20:00 and 21:00 sainsburystoyou will deliver 30 items of shopping to my apartment. Until recently I have been taking the train on Sunday mornings to Grays and shopping in Morrisons. There are a couple of points to note about Morrisons:

1. Not as cheap as one might imagine,
2. Quality not good.

Also, the store at Grays is not a superstore. This means they only sell groceries and not interesting items such as microwave cookers and other such 'white goods'. I am not sure if Morrisons have superstores to be honest.

I recently discovered that there is a Tesco Extra at Rainham quite near the station. I would have gone there last Sunday but as there were no trains on the C2C due to engineering works I took the rail replacement bus to Grays.

In the mean time, I discovered that Sainsburys and Tesco both do home deliveries in the Purfleet area. I was going to order from Tesco but I did not want to pay the £5.00 delivery charge. Instead I registered with Sainsburys and spent my hard earned cash there. At the end of the shopping process I confirmed my order and too late noticed that there is a £5.00 delivery charge!

Ho hum. The original delivery date was to be last Tuesday. I had forgotten that I was going to dinner with people from work that night, so had to cancel the order. To do this I had to telephone Sainsburys. Later on I went online and added a couple of items to my 'trolley' then searched for the next available time slot. This turned out to be this coming Thursday. In the mean time I ran out of some essentials - loo roll, tea bags, bread - and bought these in Morrisions.

So, tomorrow I'm going to have one hell of an exciting evening. The Sainsburys delivery guys (there are usually two and they will probably be men) will arrive, I'll invite them in for dinner but I'm pretty certain that they will probably refuse, being the consumate professionals that they are.
