Very light news day, couldn't find
sitgnificant economic news even in some or more obscure sources and
limited the tangental stuff.
FYI - our economic and news search
is based upon GEM's Economic Rankings of Economies, we monitor and
report news sources from the top two countires on each continent. BTW
the United States has slipped from 4th to 11th in the last year -
inspiring news.
Sunday morning commentary - a new feature - reviews the
same publications' editorial sections as well as my short list of
thought leaders. For specific business news and commentary visit our

Murdoch understands where pioneers
like Matt Drudge are taking news. With his empire and resources, a
little insight could be dangerous.
"I'm a digital immigrant. I wasn't weaned on the web, nor coddled on a
computer...My two young daughters, on the other hand, will be digital
natives. They'll never know a world without ubiquitous broadband
internet access." Speaking at the American Society of Newspaper Editors,
media baron Rupert Murdoch pushed delegates to get over their fears of
the Internet and invest in their digital wings. Since Murdoch has been
in the business quite a while and been, shall we say, successful, his
words should not be taken lightly. Here are some of the major points of
his speech.

Great article on the realites of EU membership
It used to be the EU was regarded as a means to
an end – prosperity. Now, at least in the Balkans, it is increasingly perceived
as an end in itself, a panacea
for all the social, political, and economic ills plaguing the shards of Yugoslavia.
What most people don't understand is that Europe is beset by the exact same
ills, which are only tempered by the ability of the authorities to prey on a
still marginally profitable economy. Anyone who knows anything about politics,
economics, and the nature of government ought to see that United Europe isn't
doing too well right now, although it may not quite be circling
the bowl.

A trend has been ongoing - especially
inlight of last weeks decision by UPS - Singapore is replacing Hong
Kong as Asia's economic center.
BEIJING (Dow Jones)--The Asian ocean transportation unit of American
commodities trading giant Cargill (CRG.XX) is shifting its operations
from Hong Kong to Singapore in a move aimed at "better serving the
increased demand for shipping goods in Asia."

Just when you are bouyed by the news, the political class demonstrate that selling cars is really an honorable profession.
German leaders agreed Wednesday on tough proposals to curb the flow of
cheap foreign labor, including a law that would require all foreign
companies doing business in Germany to pay workers full German wages.

Cautious optimism is called for - I do want it to be true....
WASHINGTON
The slowdown in global economic growth has "begun to bottom out" and
the world economy appears set for solid expansion this year, led by the
United States and China, the International Monetary Fund said Wednesday.

The issue of negative
rights constitutions: negative rights = people delegating their natural
rights to government, positive rights = governments determining what
rights you will be allowed based upon their ability to coerce. Did you
know that the Soviet Union with Stalin in charge had a positive rights
constitution?
Zimbabwe's ruling ZANU-PF party plans to use its two-thirds
parliamentary majority to change the constitution and create a second
chamber and the office of prime minister.
National political commissar Elliot Manyika told IRIN the party also
intended to "tighten legislation relating to land and economic reform, with
a view to giving statutory bodies more control over these crucial sectors
and core national assets".

Re: yesterdays article. This is a
huge problem in the developing world with Nigerian's displaying a
'special talent'. This is the destination of a vast percentage of
foreign aid from government's and ngo's. How many accounts and how much money
did Arafat steal from the Palestinians?
The efforts of President Olusegun Obasanjo at stemming the incidents of
money laundering by officials of governmnent at various levels yesterday
received a boost in Zurich, Switzerland, as Swiss Bankers Association said
it has classified Nigerians as High-risk customers.

Curious - this one caught me napping. I will do some research and have commentary for Sunday
MANAMA: The global banking supervisory community and banking industry
must prepare for the implementation of the Basel II standards ahead of
the January 1, 2008 deadline, a senior Gulf banking regulator said. GCC
Council of Banking Supervisors chairman and Saudi Arabian Monetary
Agency banking supervision director, Fahd Al Mufarrij, said the
challenge is even greater in emerging markets.
