With Fedora, Red Hat recreates its lost community. With the open-source Fedora project, Red Hat is aiming to rebuild its links to the open source community and regain that community's input for its innovation process. The developers and users now contributing to the Fedora project -- which a Red Hat executive credited with providing the starting point for the company's latest Enterprise Linux release -- had their first-ever meeting at a conference on Friday in Boston. I wanted to go to that too.

I have been using RH since version 3 (released on CD by O'Reilly).  I currently have FC3 on DVD waiting for the basement renovations to finish so I can install it (and I have to read up on SELinux and what pieces it has added to FC3).  It is stable, robust and functional.  The installation procedures are well in advance of any OS out there (well, I have not played with NetWare in a while, and their installation procedure was very refined) including Windows.  You can do either a full install with prompting or a kernel only install with manual control or anything in between.

If you have been wanting to try Linux, grab a copy of FC3.  You will be pleasantly surprised.

Microsoft Confirms IE Phishing Flaw (Ziff Davis). Ziff Davis - The bug, which opens the door to URL spoofing attacks, was found on a fully patched system running IE 6.0 and Windows XP Service Pack 2. [Yahoo! News: Technology]

Anyone find this to be a surprise?  Anyone?  Anyone?  One more time - Microsoft cannot begin to fill in all the holes in its OS because it never designed it to be anything but exposed.  Security after the fact is not security, it is a band-aid.  Security has to be designed in from the begining.

Lawsuit Says HP Printer Cartridges Die Before Use (Reuters). Reuters - A Georgia woman has sued Hewlett-Packard Co. , claiming the ink cartridges for their printers are secretly programed to expire on a certain date, in some cases rendering them useless before they are even installed in a printer. [Yahoo! News: Technology]

Now, I have to admit, if HP was doing this, it is kind of a nasty trick, but I honestly cannot say I have witnessed this problem first hand.  I have a drawer full of cartriges for my ink jet printer and they all seem to work fine when I put them in the printer.  Of course, I don't use my ink jet printer for casual printing.  For that, I have a bona fide laser printer (also from HP).  I only use my ink jet for colour stuff and most of the time, I don't print colour.  I print text, like most regular people.
