Armed Volunteers Plan to Patrol Border (AP). AP - Hundreds of volunteers, some of them armed, are expected to take up positions along the Mexican border Friday and begin patrolling for illegal immigrants — an exercise some fear could attract racist crackpots and lead to vigilante violence. [Yahoo! News: U.S. National]

The description of domestic terrorists is an interesting one.  I wonder what sort of jail time they will get, or if they will be sent to Cuba.  More likely they will be hailed as heros.

Boy it is a slow news day.  Sure there is the Schiavo thing in court, maybe, and Falwell is sick.  Rumors that the Pope is being fed through a tube but nothing substantive.  Johnny Cochran, Jr. is dead, and former Boy Scout leaders are charged with child porn.  Boring.  Congress is on vacation, which is a normal state of affairs even when they are in DC.  Even talking about Opening Day is clouded because King Peter is still stalling on the television deal for the Nationals.

It looks like oil prices are sliding a little, not that it will have an effect at the pumps anytime soon.  And why is that?  Why, when I read about a dollar increase in the price of oil at noon is the price at the pump on the way home another dime, yet when I read about a decline at noon, it takes a week for it to drop a penny?  And there is no indication of price gouging?  Are you sure they were looking at the same data as the rest of us?

Maybe Congress is considering slashing the debt, raising collection of taxes and actually paying attention to organizations like the TSA that continue to run programs that are demonstrated failures...probably not.

Woman Sues Over N.C. Anti-Cohabitation Law (AP). AP - A former sheriff's dispatcher who quit her job after her boss found out she lived with her boyfriend is challenging North Carolina's law against cohabitation. [Yahoo! News: Top Stories]

What is more backwards?  The Sheriff for actually paying attention or the County he works for in not firing his behind for actually making a case of it.  North Carolina should remove the law from its books soonest.  It is not, nor has it ever been an moral issue.

Longhorn could be tough sell for Microsoft. After five years without a major update to Windows, Microsoft will find plenty of willing buyers for Longhorn next year. Or will it? [CNET News.com]

The other, more important question is are people ready for yet another round of upgrades.  Most shops are just now getting off of WindowsNT Servers for 2003 or are beginning deployment of Active Directory and all the warts and planning issues that it entails, as well as just getting things stable.  To have to start on the treadmill again may not be something a lot of large shops are interested in.  The other coin is that people that are deplaying their departure from NT will have to wait through the inevitable issues of a .0 release which will further delay implementation on a large scale.
