If you do not believe a national ID card is needed and will be introduced in the United States in the next five years, it is time to get your head out of the sand.

Rumsfeld Warns Iraq Against Purges, Corruption (Reuters). Reuters - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld issued a terse warning to Iraq's new leaders on Tuesday urging them to avoid political purges or favoritism that could lead to charges of corruption in the new government. [Yahoo! News: Top Stories]

So, let me see.  The United States went into Iraq to bring democracy.  Now it is dictating how they will implement that democracy...isn't that rather undiplomatic of them?

Foiling Spies at the Vatican. When the cardinals convene to select a new pope next week, every effort will be made to frustrate high-tech spies bent on eavesdropping on the proceedings. Vatican officials say they're ready. Others aren't so sure. [Wired News]

The Catholic church almost single-handedly invented spying...I suspect when they say they are ready, they are.

Rootkit Web sites fall to DDOS attack. Two prominent Web sites that specialize in remote access software known as "rootkits" have been taken offline by a large distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack. The take-down was allegedly ordered by a shadowy group of hackers and rootkit authors who took offense to criticisms of their software posted on the sites. [InfoWorld: Top News]

I don't know whether or not I feel sorry for the site for being dumped or the authors who are so infantile that they resorted to a DDOS.

Windows XP SP2 blocking tool expires Tuesday. A special tool that blocks the download of Service Pack 2 (SP2) on Windows XP PCs will expire Tuesday, ending the last SP2 respite for users who rely on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows to keep their systems up to date. [InfoWorld: Top News]

It's bug day.  XPSP2 is forced out today whether you are ready for it or not and MS has no less than 6 patches out today that you might want to take a gander at. MS05-004 already has a problem in its installation and it warns you about that up front.  I love it when the patches have bugs.
