Congress weighs 4 IDs for licenses (USATODAY.com). USATODAY.com - It soon could be a lot more complicated for Americans to get driver's licenses. Congress is on the verge of passing a plan that could discourage illegal immigration by requiring applicants for state-issued driver's licenses - roughly 70 million people a year - to produce four types of identification at motor vehicle offices. If you have to stand in line a few minutes longer. Clearly the Representative does not get his own drivers license. I live in a small town, maybe 50,000 people. There are four DMV offices within 30 minutes of my house. The fastest I have ever gotten in and out is 2 hours and that was for something as uncomplicated as a registration sticker for my car. Current wait times for the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration is over 8 hours for routine procedures. And they say that a few more minutes in line to prove you are in the country legally and therefore can drive a car is worthwhile? Sorry, no go.
Let us go back to the real issue of Real ID - proving you are who you say and being allowed on an airplane (like a train is any safer, but I digress). The United States does NOT need a national ID card, they already have one - it is called a passport. Whether or not people choose to get one is irrelavant. What is important is that if you don't have one, you should not be allowed to fly. Period, end of issue. That is if they are really serious about security. Since they are not, this Real ID is just a bunch of whooey.
