Marvel's Not So Fantastic Weekend. Some may disagree that the $56 million estimated opening of Fantastic Four is lackluster, but heck -- even Hulk did better. [The Motley Fool]
Quite honestly, I think Marvel is missing the boat. While the Fantastic Four and the Hulk may have been good comics, they have not translated to the screen well. The Hulk was much better suited to the small screen (and I thought Bill Bixby played a great David Banner), but like all serials, it is tough to do just one movie and make it good. Even the X-Men, which was a pretty good rental, really was not cut out for the screen.
One Marvel creation that did work well and was well done was Men In Black. The follow-up was weak, but no weaker then the Hulk and certainly surpassed the Fantastic Four in terms of plot and style.
What I would like to see is if they can pull of something with Iron Man or Dr. Strange. Both have the ability to do well in the theatre if they follow the lines of MiB, rather than setting up a string of sequels.
