NRA Moves Convention From Columbus, Ohio (AP). AP - The National Rifle Association said Monday it is pulling its 2007 national convention out of Columbus because of the city's ban on assault weapons. [Yahoo! News: U.S. National]

Well done Columbus!  Now, everybody, let's see how crazy we can drive the NRA...wait, that might not be such a good idea, gun toting nutcases are to be avoided.  I know, let's just chase them around the country.  Of course, there is a nice hotel in downtown Baghdad that might be more apporpriate.

Bush: CIA leaker would be fired if crime committed (Reuters). Reuters - President Bush said on Monday anyone in his administration who was found to have committed a crime in a federal investigation of the leak of a covert CIA agent's name would be fired. [Yahoo! News: Top Stories]

That loud thud you heard was Lady Justice dropping her scales.  Seems the President is not going to fire anyone, unless they are convicted...which, when you think about it, says an awful lot about this Presidency.  After all, this from a man who invaded another country because someone suggested there was a strong possibitlity that maybe they had weapons of mass distruction.  Come to think of it, the simple illusion was enough to destroy the lives of thousands of people.  Maybe that was what he was looking for.

Teacher to Claim Insanity in Sex Case (AP). AP - A teacher will claim she was insane due to emotional stress and did not know right from wrong when she had sex numerous times with a 14-year-old student, her attorney said Monday. [Yahoo! News: U.S. National]

Ummm...yeah.  And I guess the student was thinking clearly as well.  Oh, that's right, this is the abstenance society.  Sorry, I forgot that little fact.  Forget biology, follow God...right...sure.

Next month's HP World canceled. HP World, the major systems conference for Hewlett-Packard Co. that has in the past drawn thousands of enterprise customers, has been canceled. [Computerworld News]

This is only the latest in a series of shows to go the way of the dodo bird.  Like many shows before it, the Internet has pretty much made the meet and greet unnecessary.  In the past, if you wanted to know what sort of widget was going to be next on the street, you went to a show.  Now, if you even have time to find out what the new widget is, you Google (or some other search engine) it and decide if it is right for you or not.

IT staffs that are a mere shadow of what they used to be, combined with a ho-hum attitute towards the technology that is running in most operations has made the trade show a difficult expense to foot for most corporations who are reverting to the IT as cost rather than investment model again, which means fewer dollars per show and fewer shows.

Governors say driver's license costs will soar. In the name of homeland security, motorists are going to see costs skyrocket for driver's licenses and motor vehicle offices ... [USATODAY.com Nation - Top Stories]

When Real ID was passed, it was passed as yet another unfunded mandate.  So it should come as little surprise that state governments, that are still wrestling with high unemployment, as well as other unfunded mandates (No Child, Medicare, Prescription Drugs) should not be happy about toting the bill for this one as well.  Further, they should not expect their residents to pay the bill either.  If the Federal Government is not going to require a passport for domestic travel (which, as I have said many times is a national ID), then it is up to the Federal Government to bear the costs of their national ID program, regardless of how they want to couch it.
