Linux 40% cheaper than Windows, claims IBM. Meanwhile, Unilever scales back big Linux migration because cost benefits have declined. [Computerworld News]

Let the statistics war begin.  No, I am not backing Microsoft.  I am more likely to back the solution that makes the most sense for me and for my customer.  Otherwise, does it really matter what is the cheapest?

Employers Struggle to Pick Up the Pieces After Katrina. Businesses big and small grapple with rebuilding and helping displaced workers. [Computerworld News]

It is nice to read that some companies are doing something.  One has to wonder about Wal-Mart only giving 3 days worth of pay when Harrah's is covering 90, but that is more a question of how much they value their employees as anything else.  One thing is for certain - this will put a lot of people out of work for a long period of time and it will cost the nation billions as those people that cannot work, cannot keep up with their payments on things like their houses, many of which no longer exist.

Red Tape Hinders Help for Katrina Victims (AP). AP - From all corners of this country, hundreds of would-be rescuers are wending their way to the beleaguered Gulf Coast in buses, vans and trailers. But government red tape has hampered many who ache to help Katrina's victims.[Yahoo! News: U.S. National]

I guess people do not learn.  After September 11th, the Commission's report said that a number of those killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center would not have died if they had not self-deployed.  Again, in New Orleans we have self-deployment.  People, if you show up without a ticket (and the right gear) you deserve to be turned around.

"Anyone who self-responded was not being put to work. The military was worried about having more people in the city. They want to limit it to the professionals," said Kevin Southerland, a captain with Orange Fire Department in Orange County, Calif., a member of one of eight 14-member water rescue teams sent to New Orleans at FEMA's request.

Things are bad enough down there without people, out of the chain of command, running their own show.
