Katrina Divides Rather Than Unifies U.S. (AP). AP - The extraordinary showing of national and political unity displayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, is nowhere to be found in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. [Yahoo! News: Top Stories]

The other issue, beyond the some one to blame is that on September 11, the country was not ready for an attack (at least that is the prevaling theory) of that magnitude.  For the past 4 odd years, the country has been listening to the Department of Homeland InSecurity tell them to get ready.  Along comes Katrina and guess what?  People still are not ready.  It was a storm that everyone saw coming days before it arrived.  Its size and impact were well known based on historical evidence and there was a pretty good idea what it was going to do.  So a better question to ask is why was the United States not ready and what is it going to do to improve?

Mayor worries FEMA overlooking Pascagoula. Hurricane Katrina hammered this city of 25,873 last week. At least 18 people died and an estimated 25,000 were left homeless. ... [USATODAY.com Nation - Top Stories]

The mayor has a right to worry.  FEMA right now is not covering itself with glory and neither is the Federal Government.
