Koizumi Wins Japan Election by Landslide (AP). AP - Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's triumph in parliamentary polls handed the leader a new mandate Monday to harness his revitalized ruling party and turn promises into action for a range of sweeping economic reforms. [Yahoo! News: Top Stories]

Like the United States, Japan is a country in serious need of economic reform.  If Koizumi can get even a portion of them through, it could put Japan back in the drivers seat of the world economy and perhaps force the United States into making some hard decisions that it has been reluctant to do thus far.

Katrina Leaves La. Budget in Worse Shape (AP). AP - With New Orleans' industries devastated and many of its individual taxpayers scattered across the country, Louisiana faces huge new budget problems in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. [Yahoo! News: U.S. National]

This is only the first of many issues the state and the country will have to figure out.  At what point will other legislations look at the mess and say, cutting taxes to the point were we have no net is pointless.  Unfortunately, it may never happen until it is well past too late and we have to pay twice for it.
